Research, Instruction, and Clinical Information Services: Remote Access

Services are available to faculty, students and staff of the six schools of the health sciences.

Remote Access to Library Resources

To access e-resources remotely, follow these simple steps:

  1. From the HSLS web site page, navigate to the e-resource you want to access.
  2. Click on the e-resource’s link.
  3. A pop-up box will appear.
  4. Enter your Pitt Computer Account username and password.
  5. The e-resource is now ready to be used.

You do not need to log in again for the rest of your session as long as you stay within the same browser. This means that you can search different databases, view e-journal articles, read e-book chapters, and more, all within the same session without being prompted to log in again.

In order for remote access to work correctly, you must set your browser to allow cookies.

Add remote access to links in Courseweb

You can add the remote access link to your readings in CourseWeb or an online syllabus.

Add http://pitt.idm.oclc.org/login?url= to the URL you want to proxy.

For example, to make this article available off campus, http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/v15/n10/full/nn.3195.html

add the above URL to the beginning like this

http://pitt.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/v15/n10/full/nn.3195.html

If a user is off campus a login box will appear and the user will be prompted for their Pitt computer account username and password. On campus users will automatically have access and won't see a login box.

The resources must be licensed by HSLS for this to work. Don't add the URL to resources that are freely available.

HSLS Bookmarklets

If you are a Pitt user and often come across online article citations, but cannot view the full text because you are not logged in remotely to the HSLS Web site, then set up Reload via HSLS on your desktop/laptop computer. You'll then have instant access to full-text articles that are available through HSLS subscriptions.
