Browse or search through millions of free images offered by flickr members under Creative Commons licenses. The flickr API is available to developers of alternative search engines for Creative Commons images. These tools are listed under the original flickr:Creative Commons.

• Use your own photographs! Now that it's so easy to take a picture with a cellphone, this is often the fastest method to create the perfect illustration.

Images free to use and share with no known copyright restrictions, although attribution is always appreciated.

Some sites may:

• require you to publish an acknowledgement/ attribution;
• provide the wording required for the acknowledgement;
• require you to accept cookies;
• require you to register;
• offer photos for purchase, often highlighted at the top of the page;
• return to default mode (e.g., images that are not public domain or Creative Commons) after each search;
• automatically generate incorrect attributions. (Confirm before using!)
