About Superfund & Brownfields

In 1980, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) was passed; it is known more commonly as Superfund. The Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) was signed into law in October of 1986. Authorization expired in the mid-1990's, so funding for the program comes from special authorizations.

The Federal Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act (Brownfields Law) amended CERCLA to allow for the EPA assessment and clean-up of certain properties.
