Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resources at HSLS

Using Clinical Resources with Diverse and Inclusive Representation

Books, images, and videos that show diverse and inclusive representation, or that approach topics in diversity, equity, and inclusion, for clinical teaching, learning, and practice.

Some of these resources have been highlighted by HSLS. Please see:

Clinical Signs that Present on Skin

Early exposure to images of skin of color in medical school education for topics (including those other than dermatology) is the primary goal in Pitt-based initiative, Visual Learning Equity. The following resources are primarily visual guides to how clinical signs present on skin of color:

Brown Skin Matters is a community sourced database of dermatological conditions on non-white skin. This initiative started on Brown Skin Matters Instagram, which remains an active way to browse and submit images.

Mind the Gap is a publicly available web-based handbook that illustrates clinical signs in Black and Brown skin.

Skin Deep is a free, open-access bank of high-quality pediatric-focused photographs of medical conditions in a range of skin tones for use by both healthcare professionals and the public. The project is led by the international medical team, Don’t Forget the Bubbles (DFTB) and the Royal London Hospital (RLH).

Skin Deep can be searched by by description, diagnosis, or body part; or browsed by Diagnosis A-Z. Images can be downloaded but are restricted as detailed in Use of our images.

Dermatology E-books

This selection of dermatology e-books features Skin of Color as a topic as well as in the images used. Books that have "atlas" in the title refer to a book that focuses on images and has minimal accompanying text.

Physical Examination Videos

The Communication and Interpersonal Skills series from Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination presents video content that surround diversity, equity, and inclusion topics in clinical settings. These short 2-10 minute videos convey topics such as:

  • Rapport: LGBTQ+ adults
  • Rapport: Patients with Physical and Sensory Disabilities
  • Use of Non-Stigmatizing Language
  • Use of Preferred Title, Name, and Gender Pronoun
