2022 Open Scholarship and Research Impact Challenge

Introduction

A data management plan (DMP) is a formal document outlining how you will handle your data both during your research and after the project is completed.  Developing a plan of action for managing your data is beneficial whether your funding source requires one or not.

Activities

If you need help completing these activities, review the information in the Learning Content section below.

Please fill out this form after completing 1 or more of today's activities. The more daily tasks you complete, the larger impact you may have on your own research/scholarship and the more chances you will have to win a prize for participation in the 2022 Impact Challenge.

Activity 1

Review the requirements of the funding agency where you most often apply for grants. Keep in mind that as of January 2023 a DMP will be required for all NIH funding, so if this is your primary funding agency you might want to use this time to review the template named: NIH-GEN DMSP (Forthcoming 2023) and the coresponding supplemental information.

If you do not have funding, review the Digital Curation Centre template.

Activity 2

Sign into the DMPTool with your University of Pittsburgh e-mail address and create a mock (or real) DMP.  Notify the Pitt DMPTool admins if you would like us to review and/or provide guidance.

Activity 3

Join us for office hours and chat with a librarian about DMPs! You are welcome to drop in anytime.

Learning Outcomes

Why Create a DMP

Many funding agencies require formal data management and/or sharing plans as part of their granting process. Each funding agency has specific requirements so be sure to check for your specific grant.

However, there are many other reasons to create a DMP besides as a grant requirement, including:

  • promotes discovery, new research
  • supports validation, replication of research
  • facilitates sharing & preservation
  • increases article citation rate
  • saves valuable time
  • decreases chance of data loss

Components of a DMP may Include

  • Data Types = what data?
    • kinds of data, how and who collected it, how much
  • Data Formats = data details?
    • what format, research field standards, documentation, metadata
  • Data Access = data restrictions?
    • privacy / de-identified, security, IP / copyright, embargo
  • Data Re-use = data sharing?
    • requirements, organization, annotation, availability, citation information
  • Data Preservation & Archiving = data saving?
    • long term plan, format issues, back up, costs
