"The number of international migrants has grown as a proportion of the global population (1). In 2017 international migrants constituted 3.4% of the global population, compared with 2.8% in 2000. During the period 2000–2017 the total number of international migrants rose from 173 million to 258 million, an increase of 49% (2)."
In the article by Al-Ajlouni et al, the authors used the Global Burden of Disease dataset to estimate the incidence of amputation in different regions of the Middle East and North Africa. The authors found that males in Syria had a lower extremity amputation (LEA) rate of 46 per 100,000 and toe amputation rate of 246 per 100,000. Females had a lower extremity amputation (LEA) rate of 39 per 100,000 and toe amputation rate of 132 per 100,000.
Tater, Kablan, and Yurtseven used data from 4 prothesis and orthosis centers run by an international NGO who provided care to civilians who had suffered an amputation during the Syrian Civil War. See Table 1 for a complete breakdown on the number of amputations and demographics. Tables 3 and 4 provide data for the severity of the amputation and the body part that was amputate. Table 5 provides the cause (bomb, firearm, etc.).

Your objective is to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the need for prosthetics and accompanying rehabilitation for amputees among the refugee populations in Jordan. Teams should consider and demonstrate potential sustainability, including quality and timeliness, and equitable accessibility of their approach. Be sure that strategies demonstrate cultural sensitivity to the refugee population’s particular needs and living situation. The plan should be able to be implemented over three years with a budget of $5 million USD. You will be presenting your proposed strategy to representatives from the Jordanian government and a large private found who will select and fund the best proposal. Each team will have the discretion to select the in-country location and healthcare setting to implement their proposed strategy.
Who is receiving the assistance: Refugees in Jordan who need prosthetics and/or rehabilitation
