Using EndNote Online

  • EndNote Online allows you to access your EndNote references via any web browser. Register for a free account via the EndNote website. You can access your EN Online account any time at myendnoteweb.com.
  • Once you have an account, sync your desktop and online libraries so that you will see your references in your online library. To do this in EndNote 20 or 21, click on Library and then Sync. You'll be prompted to enter your EndNote Online email and password. (Note that you should only sync one desktop library with EndNote online. If you try to sync more than one they'll merge into a giant library.)
  • Whenever you are away from your regular computer, you can add references to EndNote Online, and then sync the two libraries when you're back at your computer.
  • If you're going to be away from your EndNote desktop while writing a paper, you can also download EndNote Online's Cite While You Write plug-in, and you'll still be able to use EndNote to create citations in Word.
  • Note: you don't have to have an EndNote desktop account to use the online version; it's free to all.

EndNote Web vs EndNote Online Classic

With the release of EndNote 21, EndNote now has EndNote Web and EndNote Online Classic. If you have EndNote 21, you can log in to either EndNote Web or EndNote Online Classic with the same email and password.

So what's the difference? You can access your desktop library via a browser in both versions of EndNote online. EndNote Web's interface looks very similar to your desktop EndNote library, making it easy to use. EndNote Web is also required for the new Google Docs CWYW plug-in. However, EndNote Web does not have the same functionality as EndNote Online Classic. Classic is still required for functions like group sharing and journal match.
