Cause of Illness Data

Admissions/Discharges

HCUPnet

Produced by: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), US Department of Health and Human Services
Geographic coverage: County, State, US level
Dates of coverage: 1997 to most current available

Note: HCUPnet is a bit complicated to use for several reasons.

  • It requires data look up by codes for conditions or diseases or by surgeries or procedures.
    • These codes can come from a variety of tools, including the Clinical Classification Software (CSS; both diagnoses and procedures), Major Diagnostic Categories, and Medicare- Severity Diagnosis Related Groups, and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9). Fortunately, there is a lookup tool for each classification system.
  • Additionally, not all data is available at the state level; much of the data that is available does not include all states.
    • Pennsylvania state data appears to be unavailable to view in many of the reports.
    • See below to access data from EDDIE
